Server Based Computing
What is Server Based Computing?
Server Based Computing Example:
There are three branches in the company. Up until now it has had to contract or employ IT maintenance staff based at all 3 locations. Server-based computing means that IT staff are now only required on one site. In the unlikely event that a terminal collapses at one of the other sites, staff can simply switch terminals and continue working, taking away any urgent requirement for a replacement unit.
Under a typical office network setup, all users have powerful computers on which they run software. The server is used as a location for central file storage, and specific company wide tasks such as file exchange and internet access.
Server-based computing means that all users run a much smaller terminal, and all software needed is run directly through the server. Every terminal is now little more than a screen and keyboard, although existing PC’s can still be used if necessary. With server-based computing, every user has a much smaller terminal, and all their day-to-day software is run from the server.
Server-based computing benefits:
- Save money: smaller terminals are cheaper than PC’s.
- Better Security: centrally controlled software minimizes the risk of viruses.
- Optimise facilities management: staff can move between desks with no downtime.
- Improved Maintenance: All system maintenance can now be done on one machine, in one place.
Working from Home Benefits
You can apply security and software management tools to home-workers, so that your staff can get access to all of the files and software that they use in the office.
Benefits for Business Continuity
If a flood, fire, or other disaster renders your office unusable, server-based computing means that you can be up and running almost immediately from another location.
